Residential Indoor
To encourage the installation of water efficient plumbing fixtures and appliances, BAWSCA offers several programs and a variety of resources:
Toilets
BAWSCA’s High-Efficiency Toilet (HET) Direct Install Program
This program targets multi-family residential properties with direct installation of HETs.
What are HETs? HETs are modern efficient toilets designed to use at least 20 percent less water than standard low flow toilets. Although they use less water, they perform well.
To qualify for this program, your water provider must be a BAWSCA member agency that is participating in the program. For the current list of participating BAWSCA agencies for FY 2006/07 click here (link to PDF document—document coming soon).
Additionally, your property must be a multi-family housing unit, such as an apartment complex; single-family residential homes do not qualify for this program.
For more information on this program or to apply, please contact Benjamin Pink at the BAWSCA office at 650-349-3000.
Agency Specific Toilet Programs
Many BAWSCA member agencies may have local programs offering rebates or other incentives for the purchase of high efficiency toilets. For a list of BAWSCA member agencies and their contact information please click here.
Clothes Washers
BAWSCA’s Residential Washing Machine Rebate Program (WMRP)
This program offers rebates to customers who purchase qualifying efficient clothes washers. Depending on which BAWSCA member agency is your current water provider and the water efficiency of your new washing machine, you may qualify for a rebate of between $25 and $150. PG&E is also offering rebates up to $75. With both rebates you can save as much as $225.
The highest efficiency washers use just 13 gallons per load on average, compared to 37 gallons for standard washers. The next highest efficiency washers use 18 gallons per load on average. Multiply that by the number of washloads per year in your household and the savings in water, energy and dollars add up. High-efficiency clothes washers also require less detergent (more savings) and are gentler on your clothes (even more savings)!
Water and Energy Savings
Water and energy savings from high-efficiency clothes washers will vary by household, depending on a number of factors, such as usage, machine make and model, and water and energy rates (see comparison of efficient models vs. standard models here (link to PDF document—document coming soon). Total savings are conservatively estimated at $50 per year, or more than $700 over the life of the washer, based on these assumptions (link to PDF document—document coming soon).
